Disclosure: Bluestreak Books sent me a copy of Seventeen: College Goals & is providing a prize pack for one of my lucky readers!
You guys, my oldest daughter is sixteen! And every day I’m totally aware that I get only about two more years with her before she leaves for college… My husband and I are trying not to panic. But the whole college thing — that’s new to us since she’s the oldest. There’s a lot to figure out about the whole process. I was psyched when SEVENTEEN COLLEGE GOALS: An Insider’s Guide to Finding and Getting Into a School You’ll Love arrived in the mail to help. (It’s by the Editors of Seventeen Magazine published by Bluestreak Brooks, an imprint of Weldon Owen.)
Seventeen College Goals Interactive Journal
This interactive journal is for meant for high school students to use themselves. It’s part-journal, part-planner, part-guide, divided into three sections: Junior Year, Senior Year, and Before You Go.
What will your teen student find inside? To-do lists, journal prompts, quizzes, quotes, and information on self-care, college testing, letters of recommendation, and that sort of thing.
My daughter has no idea what she wants to do in her life — but that’s normal I think and I’m not (too) worried. She already knows she would prefer a small campus. I *think* she understands that money, her grades, and extracurricular activities affect where she’ll go. She just decided to quit her dance group so we’ve had that talk with her school counselor about what DO colleges look at — with extra curricular activities being important.
Her (college) counselor at school suggested we start doing local college visits to see a small, medium, large school — even if that’s not where she wants to go. It will give her an idea of the campus. I like how the College Goals guide gives kids specific tips. (Like dress nice, don’t wear a graphic tee and walk around by yourselves without parents.)
There’s so much more to going to college than when I picked a college.
Do you remember back when we were going to college? I don’t know about you, but I had NO support from my school, my parents, or books. (My college choice was based on where my boyfriend lived. Really great decision making, right?!) So it’s awesome to see this helpful book and how much things have changed to support our kids.
