Caitlin Friedman asks How Do You Feed a Hungry Giant?

Well, I don’t know. Do you?

Oscar doesn’t know either. He’s the boy who finds the hungry giant in his backyard. Holding a “Food Please” sign. Right next to the swings and sandbox. Gulp.

What should Oscar feed the giant?

Well, he starts with grapes. Then leftover pizza. Then 50 strawberry yogurts, a pot of tomato soup, a bunch of bananas, 200 chocolate chip cookies, every food he can find, and the giant is still hungry.

But, now Oscar’s cupboard and refrigerator are empty.

Fortunately, mom knows what to cook for a hungry giant and invites him to stay for dinner.

Shaw Nielsen How Do You Feed a Hungry Giant A Munch and Slurp Pop Up Book For Hungry GiantsEight attached recipes show you just what mom cooked for the giant. Mouth-watering giant portions of:

  • The Biggest Burger in the World
  • The Giant’s Giant Cheese Crackers
  • Pizza-Sized Chocolate Chip Cookie
  • Ginormous Blueberry Muffin
  • Pasta Mountain
  • Mega-Pigs in Blankets
  • Broccolini Trees With Cheese
  • Jumbo Fries
The Giant’s Giant Cheese Crackers
8 Tablespoons unsalted butter chilled
1 cup sharp Cheddar Cheese, grated
1/4 cup Parmesan Cheese, grated
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 egg white, lightly beaten
1. Combine the butter and both cheeses in a food processor, and process until blended. With the motor running, slowly add the flour, garlic powder, and salt through the feed tube and blend thoroughly.
2. Remove the dough from the processor, divide it in half, and wrap each half in plastic wrap. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
3. Preheat the oven to 350.
4. Lightly dust a large sheet of parchment paper with flour. Unwrap the chilled dough and sandwich it between two pieces of parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, roll the two pieces out until they are 1/4 inch thick. Cut out crackers with a biscuit cutter or a cookie cutter — any shape you want. Gather up the scraps of dough, knead them together, roll them out, and cut out more crackers.
5. Butter a baking sheet, and arrange the crackers on it. Prick the tops of the crackers with a fork, and then brush them with the egg white. Bake until golden brown, about 15 minutes.
6. Wearing oven mitts, remove the baking sheet from the oven. Use a spatula to transfer the crackers to wire racks. Let them cool completely.

You’ll love Shaw Nielsen illustrations for this gigantic pop-up, pull-tab, foldout story. Check out his sketches showing how he developed the paper engineered elements. Very cool.

Now you know how to feed a hungry giant!
