What’s in the Free Reading Activity Packet?
Goal Setting Page
Before you start, sit down with your children to set some goals and intentions. Start with how many books they want to read in total. Then move on to how many minutes they want to read every day.
It’s also important that kids plan for success — what do they need?
Do your kids already know books that they want to read? List those here.
Talk about where to find more book ideas.
Books I’ve Read List (with Stars for Rating)
Use this page to list the books your kids read. Add a rating so you can remember how much they liked the book.
Genre Graph
It’s helpful to notice what genre you prefer to read in order to consider reading more in other genres. And, this adds a little math to your summer reading.
Calendar Pages
In these calendar pages, you’ll have to add in the dates yourself as well as the minutes logged.
Word Collection Page
Read with a mindset to find new words. Write those on this page in fancy lettering.
Book Art Pages
Extend your thinking about the books you read with doodles and illustrations.
How to Use the Summer Reading Packet
PRINT OUT this summer reading packet. (Reminder: you can always print favorite pages more than once.)
Keep the printable as a simple packet by just stapling the pages. Or, glue the pages into a spiral notebook. Or, hole punch and put into a folder with fasteners.
Use the pages in any order that makes sense to you and your children.
HELP YOUR CHILD SET GOALS. Before your kids get started on summer reading, have them think of their own goals. How many books do they want to read? What books do they want to read? Where can they get ideas for other book titles?
Consider your library’s summer reading program. Here’s a list of summer reading programs — I particularly like ones that give books for rewards.
PROVIDE BOOKS. Use my book lists and buy a few books to get your kids get started. Let your kids pick the order of when they read which book. Then, help them find more books at the library or bookstore as needed using Imagination Soup lists, Goodreads, Amazon, friends, or teachers.
If your kids don’t already have a library card, this would be a great time to get them one! And, of course, make regular visits to the library to browse.

Thank you Melissa for your book lists for kids and the Summer Reading packet. We used it last year for our Library Summer Reading Program, and will use it again this year (as we are still doing it Online again). Even at Tween/Teen age the kids enjoyed hearing readings from different genres.

I’m so glad this year is been fun going to the library with my daughter she’s excited when I read her books at home having her draw and color expands her learning new words as I read her more books helping her do activities at her community libraries she is growing her imagination as thinking she can be an inventer or a veterinarian or also a teacher she is my everything thanks Melissa for the print packet this year 2022
