I know it’s a busy, busy time of year with many economic demands. But if you’re like me, you’re often looking for meaningful ways to give back and to increase your charitable contributions for the year.

DonorsChoose is one way that we can support teachers and students.

Teachers already spend too much of their own money on classroom materials. (The average is $500 per teacher per year with over $1 billion annually for U. S. public school teachers.)

Diverse Books Are Mirrors, Doors, and Windows

Students feel valued when they see themselves in the pages of a book. Kids feel valued when they read stories about kids who look like them, come from the same place as them, have the same struggles as them, and so forth.

I know you’ll agree that there’s nothing better than giving children access to books that reflect a mirror into their lives.

But that’s not all. It’s of vital importance that we give students books that open doors and windows into the lives of others. So no matter who you are, what you look like, or where you come from, you can read outside the bubble of your own world — you can read about all different kinds of people, cultures, and places.
