What is Little Free Library?

It’s a global nonprofit organization to share the love of reading by reusing and sharing books for free with others. Their mission statement says the Little Free Library “builds community, inspires readers and expands book access for all through a global network of volunteer-led Little Free Libraries.”

The purpose of these boxes of books is to expand book access and inspire readers with book sharing.

How does it work? Take a book and give or return a book. It’s free and as simple as that. However, if you don’t have a book, you can still take a book for free.

Build your own!

Are you wondering how to make your own Little Free Library? You can download blueprints to make your own Library on a wooden post. This page on their website also includes directions to transform an old kitchen cabinet into your library box.

HGTV offers tutorials, as does Spruce Crafts.

Buy a Little Free Library.

If you’re like me and feel daunted by making your own box, you can actually buy a pre-made Library online using sites like Etsy, Amazon, or Wayfair.

I think this is a GREAT gift idea for a book-lover who has everything. So if you’re looking for a gift idea, why not give a Little Free Library box?

Here are some darling choices you can buy. I’m partial to this plastic choice because it won’t mold or get ruined by the weather.

Have you ever used a Little Free Library? Or do you have one of your own?

How do I use my Little Library for free?

Take a book for free! Share a book for free. It’s an honor system, so you can swap books or take one even if you don’t have a book to donate.

Is there a Little Free Library app?

Yes. Find a Little Free Library using the mobile app.
