Students in high school need study and organization tips that emphasize visual learning, especially with STEM topics. Most parents agree that STEM topics are essential subjects but are also subjects in which their children struggle. Students can use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes, Flags and Tabs from the Post-it® Brand World of Color Rio de Janeiro collection with these helpful study tips to improve grades and overall STEM learning.

STEM Study Tips for Teens with Post It Brand Notes

According to a recent Back-to-School STEM Research Study conducted by the Post-it® Brand, 62% of parents have used memory games to help their students with STEM subjects. They’ve also used flashcards (58%), study guides (48%) and note taking (41%). But what will really help students learn?

Most of us, students included, use ineffective methods to learn and study information. For example, rereading, highlighting, and cramming are all poor ways to learn. (But are frequently used!)

STEM Study Tips

1. QUIZ YOURSELF

As you read quiz yourself. If you struggle to remember something, or have to relearn it, you learn it better than you would have without trying to remember it.

HOW:

Place a Post-it® Super Sticky Note on your book or notebook — without looking back, write down what you remember reading. If you can’t remember, go back and relearn the information and try your self-quiz again.

2. MIX IT UP

Make a study schedule so you can space out learning and practicing information. Studying all at once (cramming) produces poor results — like not remembering the information. . . it doesn’t stick. Instead, space out the time between your study sessions.

HOW:

Do math for 20 minutes, take a break and work on science for 20 minutes. Return to finish math and quiz yourself, then do the same for science. Use different colors of the Post-it® Super Sticky Notes from the World of Color Rio de Janeiro collection to color code for each subject.

Break up your learning time into morning and afternoon or evening sessions. Find which times work best for you as a learner.

3. FIND MEANING

Reflection and connecting information to what you already know (your background knowledge) works to recall the information.

HOW:

In your book or notebook, use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to write down how you connect the information to your life.

4. ORGANIZE INFORMATION

Categorizing information helps your brain connect the information in your long-term memory.

HOW:

Mark the sub-sections in each chapter with Post-it® Flags and Tabs from the World of Color Rio de Janeiro collection for easy access.

Within the text, use Post-it® Super Sticky Notes to write down key information. (This is much better than highlighting.)

Color code information using Post-it® Super Sticky Notes, and coordinating Flags and Tabs from the World of Color Rio de Janeiro collection.

5. TURN OFF ELECTRONICS (aka. CELL PHONES!)

It may seem obvious to parents but not to most teens. Texting while studying is distracting and doesn’t help you recall important information.

6. USE A PLANNER

Keep track of what you need to work on, due dates, and what you’ve done.

HOW:

Buy a planner. Use Post-it® Flags and Tabs to mark important dates in the calendar, to-do’s, and more. Keep a to-do list daily. Cross off what you’ve completed.
