New Learning Game: Word on the Street

Sneak in word and spelling practice with a fun new vocabulary game called Word on the Street. It’s fast-paced and competitive which makes the learning less obvious since gameplay is the priority. But don’t worry, learning is happening — you’ll be building vocabulary and problem solving as well as practicing spelling. Word on the Street, from Educational Insights, is meant for 2 players or 2 teams ages 10 and up.

If your kids are younger, you might want to check out Word on the Street Junior which is best for ages 7 and up.

Learning to play this word game is simple and playing is a fun challenge for word enthusiasts. (Did I mention my kids ALWAYS beat me at every game? You’d think I’d have somewhat of an advantage being a writer but nooooo. Maybe it’s just a challenge for me and playtime for everyone else.)

How to Play:

Teams (or individual players) sit on either side of the long alphabet game board.

Letter tiles are placed on the game board down the middle column.

Teams or individual players draw a card, decide on the best word (there is some strategy to this you’ll find), and spell out the word.

Spell the word out loud and move the corresponding alphabet piece (except the vowels which aren’t on the board) one space toward your team’s side. So something in a vending machine might be: c-a-n-d-y. You’d move the letters c, n, d, and y one space each toward your side.

You’re hoping to move the letter tiles off the board, collect them, and win by being the first to get 8 titles total.

Did I mention this is timed? That’s important if you’re playing on a team — you better choose your word quickly.

Doesn’t this seem like a great game for cooperation and learning? I think so.

It doesn’t take too long for your kids to kick your butt. Something like 10 – 15 minutes.

Word on the Street is a blast! We’re adding it to our game night rotation. (And maybe one day, I’ll even win!?)

Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this game. All opinions are my own.
