Starting Your Parent-Child Book Club
1. Decide who to invite. (Group by interest, age or gender.)
2. Select the first book, date, time and location.
3. Read the book with your child.
4. Plan discussion questions and/or activities. Involve your children in this process or let them plan it themselves.
5. Add snacks and you’re ready to go!
Book Suggestions:
Frankie Pickle and the Closet of Doom!
written and illustrated by Eric Wight
Simon and Schuster, May 2009
early chapter book and graphic novel combo, ages 7 – 10
Frankie is living every kid’s dream — he doesn’t have to clean his room. Plus, he decides not to clean himself while he’s at it. So you can imagine his stench, his disastrous room and what the closet of doom looks like! I love when Frankie’s imagination turns him into a superhero and the story becomes a graphic (comic) novel. It’s a hilarious, easy to read book with a great lesson.
Eric Wight will be posting on Imagination Soup in June. Don’t miss Wight’s ideas to get your children writing Frankie Pickle style.
Olivia Opens a Lemonade Stand
Simon and Schuster, July 2010
picture book, ages 4 – 6
Happy Summer! Read Olivia Opens a Lemonade Stand with your child. Pick from one of these fun activities to do with your book group:
- Learn how to make lemonade the old-fashioned way. Squeeze lemons, then add water and sugar to taste.
- Open a neighborhood lemonade stand with two different flavors of lemonade. Pick
jobs to do, trade if desired. - Have the parent-child pair bring something to share with the book group. Play restaurant with the buffet of food. The kids serve the adults.
- At the book group, children and parents share with the group their favorite part of the story. Parents, this is a good chance to model listening and talking about the book.

My daughter just started a Mother-Daughter Book Club with her homeschool friends and their moms. Our first book was “The Mother Daughter Book Club”, then “Number the Stars and now we are finishing up “Little Women”
Each mother/daughter brings a snack to share and we talk about the books. We love it!
