We often ask kids what they’re good at, what they like, or who they are. Help kids figure this out with art journal prompts. Here are four ideas for kids to express who they are through writing and art –art journals.
Art Journal Prompts for Kids
1. Collage “I Am”
2. Collage – Favorite Things
3. “I Believe” Sun
3. List – Favorite Things
4. Portraits – with or without describing words
You can see how this gives us an opportunity to be self-reflective.
Not only that, it’s a great together activity for both kids and grown-ups.
This summer, I spent many hours art journaling. There’s something so soul-nourishing about both writing and creating art – it’s hard to even explain. It just helps. (I’m very nervous to share these pages . . . they are very personal.)
Art Journaling Materials
You don’t need any fancy materials to art journal. I love using a spiral-bound blank, thick paper journal and magna artist pens. Use whatever you have around the house – water colors, acrylics, recycling, . . .
We tried Smash Books but haven’t found them as useful as a blank notebook. Have you tried them? What did you think?
Try these activities with your kids and let me know what you think!

Love these art journaling ideas. My kids just doodle in their blank books.
What wonderful ideas for my daughter and I to use as we fill in our “SMASH Books” (from Michaels hobby store). We love our Smash books, but there are some pages we did not know how to use. Your pages here are BEAUTIFUL!! Thank you for sharing!!!! So glad someone pinned this on Pinterest or I might not have ever seen it!!
This is a great idea. I’ve been fiddling with my art journal for 6 months now and haven’t put much in it. These prompts will be helpful. I love the idea of doing it with my daughter too.
