Free Comic Book Day 2015
Saturday, May 2, 2015 is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY. Go to any of these stores and get a free comic book! You’ll have 50 titles from which to select the perfect comic book. Bring a friend or two so you all can get a free comic book and trade them later.
Many stores are also hosting events for Free Comic Book Day– think cosplayers, prizes, gaming, food, and sales!
Yes, Comics Count as Reading
Parents, you may know that I’m a big comic book fan. And here’s why . . .
Comic books engage readers in a visual way, forcing them to make inferences (draw conclusions) which is a higher level thinking strategy. Not only that, readers need variety and if comic books hook your child, consider their reading diet expanded and celebrate.
I expanded on my reasons in this post a few years ago — Reasons to Let Your Kids Read Comic Books — and defined some terms (graphic novel, comic book, manga) which might be helpful to you.
Just give comic books a chance will you?
“Comics are a gateway drug to literacy,” says Art Spiegelman, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Maus and TOON Books Series Advisor.
