Beginning Chapter Books
Oliver and the Seawigs by Philip Reeve, illustrated by Sarah McIntyre
I thoroughly enjoyed this imaginative beginning chapter book. Oliver must rescue his explorer parents who are trapped on a moving island, one one of the Rambling Isles. He befriends a small Rambling Island whom he names Cliff as well as a mermaid named Iris who help him find his parents.
Beginning Chapter Books
The Loch Ness Punster by Kate Klise, illustrated by M. Sarah Klise
The 43 Old Cemetery Road early reader series continues with this 7th book. It’s another funny adventure with ghosts, a bad guy, a punster uncle, and a happily ever after. A GREAT series!
Beginning Chapter Books
The Fourteenth Goldfish by Jennifer L. Holm
Ellie’s scientist grandfather discovered the secret to youth so instead of being an old man, he becomes a teenager who dresses and acts like an old man and goes to school with Ellie. An adventurous caper ensues as Ellie, her classmate, and her grandfather try to break into his former lab to steal back his formula. Excellent writing with a wise ending.
Beginning Chapter Books
Rise of the Earth Dragon (Dragon Masters) by Tracey West, illustrated by Graham Howells
In the times of castles and kingdoms, Drake learns he is a dragon master (and that dragons are real!) He must train with the other kids to master his dragon, an earth dragon. This is a fun chapter book that will interest almost any child as it has just the right amount of conflict, adventure, and excitement.
I love this series, particularly the characters who are so stinking awesome and cute! This book is filled with humor and sticky situations as we follow Danny who must rescue his annoying cousin Spencer from knights (who everyone though were extinct) in a castle tower. Luckily Danny has help from his friends, Wendell, Christina, and a pigeon called Fluffy. These stories always make me smile.
Beginning Chapter Books
The Ghost Backstage (The Haunted Library) by Dori Hillestad Butler, illustrated by Aurore Damant
Another intriguing adventure of Claire and her ghostly friend, Kaz. . . . Have they found Kaz’s mom? What or who is haunting the school theater and causing all the mischief? This is a new favorite series of ours, we love the characters and the adventures.
Beginning Chapter Books
Mr. Pants Slacks, Camera, Action! by Scott McCormick, illustrated by R. H. Lazzell
Mr. Pants gets to borrow his mom’s videocamera and his movie making is quite the silliness. Finally he gets something to submit to the contest. About zombies, carrots, gobbling like a turkey. Or something like that. Silly second graphic novel in the series.
Beginning Chapter Books
Tales of Bunjitsu Bunny by John Hemmelman
Isabel, the best bunjitsu artist in her school, is so smart and helpful, she’s always saving her classmates, and teaching them wisdom. Short stories with lovely lessons.
Beginning Chapter Books
Ranger in Time #1: Rescue on the Oregon Trail by Kate Messner, illustrated by Kelley McMorris
Ranger, a golden retriever trained for search-and-rescue, travels back to the Oregon Trail to help a family in need. It’s a simple story that introduces the ups and downs of traveling on the Oregon Trail. The pacing is a bit slow but it’s worth reading for the history, especially if you’re a dog lover.

Owl Diaries Eva’s Treetop Festival by Rebecca Elliott
I liked this more than my 9-year old but I think it’s a really cute book that’s just right for beginning readers, particularly girls. Eva writes in diary form all about getting the Bloomtastic Festival put together and how she eventually learns to ask friends for help.

  1. Thanks very much! A struggling reader I’m teaching and I both needed a little inspiration. I’ve just held several of these at the library….

  2. Melissa, I was only familiar with THE FOURTEENTH GOLDFISH, but this looks like a great selection of books 🙂
