I’m loving these newly published books for growing readers ages 5 to 8! I think the new early reader series called Lone Wolf is hysterical, but there are a lot of gems. See for yourself…

Lone Wolf Goes to School written by Kiah Thomas, illustrated by K-Fai Steele
EARLY READER
The ending of this book is THE BEST — I cracked up, and so will your readers. Wolf wants to be left alone! There are people everywhere, which makes him growl. He tries school, the movies, and the beach. Finally, Wolf figures out a plan, a perfect plan, to be by himself. And you will love it!

Bear and Bird are Best Friends written by Jarvis
EARLY READER
It’s true there are a LOT of early reader friendship books. Maybe too many. But I still would make space for this new title on my bookshelf because it’s sweet and fun with personality-filled main characters and relatable adventures like a picnic and telling bad jokes.

Drag and Rex Sweet and Silly written by Susan Lubnar, illustrated by Blythe Russo
CHAPTER BOOK
Inside this charming illustrated chapter book are three short friendship stories, each with three chapters about friends and roommates Drag (a dragon) and Rex (a T Rex), who have opposite personalities. The stories are silly and sweet: planning gifts for Valentine’s Day, finding a good recipe for “oodles” (showing that Drag isn’t very smart), and trying to remember their shopping list.

The Hotel Balzaar written by Kate DiCamillo, illustrated by Julia Sarda
CHAPTER BOOK
(Although this is book 2 in The Puppets of Spelhoust, this can be read independently.) In DeCAmillo’s unique way, she tells stories within stories that move slowly with symbolism that are lovely, sometimes confusing, but, in this case, ends with a warmhearted, longed-for conclusion. This story is about Marta, the daughter of a hotel maid, who misses her missing father but befriends a mysterious Countess and her talking parrot. The Countess insists on telling Marta stories. At first, they seem random until we reach the sixth story, when Marta puts the pieces together. If you like gentle stories filled with mysterious symbolism, this will be a good fit. But I don’t think it’s for everyone.
