If you have growing readers who need good chapter books, you should know that I’m endorse chapter books based on several factors — a great story, text complexity, font size, and appeal for primary age students.

I’m actually shocked when so many books get published that shouldn’t. But in good news, the books on this list are ALL spot-on for primary readers! (I’ve read WAY more books than I’ve endorsed.)

Here are new, good chapter books I know your readers will love!

Squirlish: Shark in the Park written by Ellen Potter
In this second book, Cordelia teams up with the shark-obsessed squirrel prince on a hunt to find the missing Royal Scepter. Their hunt takes them to the Natural History Museum, where, among other things, she and the squirrel prince learn the important history of Seneca Village, a 19th-century settlement of African-American landowners in what is now Central Park. I adore this series and loved this playful sequel!

Amber Brown Is NOT a Crayon written by Paula Danziger, adapted and illustrated by Victoria Ying (GRAPHIC NOVEL)
As charming as the original novel, this lovely graphic adaptation is a delight for growing readers who will relate to the big feelings and friendship struggles of Amber Brown. Everything in third grade is going great for Amber Brown (who is NOT a crayon) until her best friend since preschool announces he’s moving away. It makes Amber so mad when Justin seems excited about his new house and town. That leads to a big fight and the silent treatment. Now that they’re not speaking, Amber is mad and miserable. Can she figure out how to talk to Justin again before it’s too late and he’s gone? (What parents or grandparents also loved this book when they were younger?)
