The premise of Akin is to find related sets of cards. One group of cards is set out in a 4 x 4 grid. (Clearly I didn’t count right when I took the image below . . . just pretend it’s 4 x 4.) We used the red object cards.

To start your game play, turn over one of the other card stacks. In this case, it is a quality. )You can reverse this play and set out the quality cards and turn over the object cards.)

The goal is to be the first person to find two object cards that relate to the quality. So for the card SMELLS, you might pick RUNNING SHOES and TOOTHBRUSH. Explain your reasoning. To win the round, the other players must agree with your logic. (Running shoes are stinky and toothbrushes smell like toothpaste.) If they don’t think your reasoning works, game play continues.

So for the quality CURVY — you might have to stretch your thinking to find curvy things if you don’t see something immediately obvious. Would you pick FORK? Or what about CACTUS? Deep thinking required to play!

Incidentally, aren’t these kind of questions on the SAT and ACT? What great practice for that, among other things.

What’s even more fun is how you get your cards– with suction cups!

If you see a card you want, use your suction cup to pick it up. Each player gets 2 suction cups.

My kids really liked this game. And, as usual, I lost almost every time. I love that they’re such good thinkers . . . and would like to think that’s where my brain cells went — I donated the good ones to them! Right??

We play games almost every night of the week if there’s time just to stay connected with each other and have fun. It’s a great activity for after homework that isn’t screen time.

What are your family game favorites? Would you add this to your collection?
