4 Reasons Why We’re Doing Scholastic’s Summer Reading Challenge #SummerReading

This summer vacation we’re going online for our summer reading program. We’re doing the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge “Reading Under the Stars.”
Now that the girls are on break, they’re reading every day and going to the Scholastic site to record their minutes and do book-related activities.
Here’s why we’re glad we have the Scholastic Reading Challenge and think your kids ages 4-14 will want to join us, too.
1. Convenient.
We can use any device (computer, iPad, smartphone) to log on and record the kids’ daily minutes read.
No driving required.
No filling in a sheet which gets lost mid-summer.
Even better, my kids are doing this on their own – no mommy needed. 🙂 (I’m so in love with independent activities!)
2. Fun rewards.
As you read and record your minutes, you earn badges, prizes, and unlock constellations. Not only that, you can read and complete challenges.
Kids get a choice in everything – badges and challenges. This provides excellent buy-in which my kids need and want.
What kind of rewards do you get? FREE chapters to read from your favorite books!
Oh, I can’t forget this biggie — you can be part of the world record! Scholastic is trying to beat last year’s summer reading world record of 176,438,473 minutes. (My kids think this is way cool.)
3. Totals your minutes read.
I recommend bookmarking this page so you can easily get back to it.
4. Awesome book-related games and activities.
My kids always explore the online options such as a Clue Hunt game from 39 Clues, a dress up Abby game from Whatever After, an end-of-the-year quiz, and the book trailer videos.
Lately they’ve been hanging out on the Harry Potter’s section – it’s got so many cool things to do! Here’s one of their Year 3 Create a Creatures —
