STEM Skills in ThinkFun's Roller Coaster Challenge

We’ve been loving ThinkFun’s Roller Coaster Challenge. Kids get the STEM skills of logic, spatial reasoning, and engineering plus a satisfying end result in a fun loop de loop roller coaster game.

The game is for ages 6 and up. Both my 12 and 15 year old enjoy playing with it so it’s engaging enough to span a wide range of ages.

STEM Skills in ThinkFun’s Roller Coaster Challenge

Cards in four levels of difficulty give you a starting place for the roller coaster. BUT, the logic and spatial reasoning part of the game is that you’re also given a list of other necessary pieces that must fit into the finished roller coaster . . . somewhere. Your job is to figure out where those pieces fit.

The cards tell you how tall each post. Like I mentioned, some posts are shown on the grid and some are on the list to figure out on your own. Deductive reasoning and engineering skills come in to play here.

Attach the track pieces to the posts. The track pieces easily slide into the post and snap together.

Each of the colors means something — how steep the track is. Also, each track includes dots which indicate how many grid squares it spans.

You’ll continue to refer to the list of pieces to add to the grid until you’ve built a successful roller coaster.
