Young Writers and Stickers = Sticker Stories

This post may contain affiliate links.

Young writers love to write sticker stories. Buy fun themed stickers to write sticker stories, an idea which YOU can do at home with your own kids. (yeah!)

Writing for this activity looks like  . . .

– writing by ones self with invented spelling

– creating a wordless picture book

– dictating the story to another writer (me)

Materials:

Stickers

Writing supplies

Imagination!!

Blank Books

Steps:

1. Read a simple picture book together. Talk about the action was. Explain that action is something that happens in a story, an adventure!

2. Have the kids look and select stickers that give them an idea for an adventure story.

3. Create a story with stickers and write the story. You can do this at the same time or do the stickers first and go back to write.

Variations:

Use stamps instead of stickers.

Use stencils instead of stickers.

Focus on beginning, middle, end instead of action.

Focus on problem and solution instead of action.

Can you read what JJ wrote? Best guesses?

P.S. Speaking of stickers, I LOVE the little Dover sticker books for rewards. If you’re like me and you don’t want to reward with food or expensive toys, these can be the perfect treat for achieving a behavior goal. I buy 20 – 30 books at a time when one of my kids needs some reinforcement. (They’re $1.35.) They’re hard to find so if you like them, buy them from Barnes and Nobles. (Also, if you do, I’ll get a percentage of the sale which is how I earn money for my work on Imagination Soup!!)

  1. hello, i need some material about sticker stories,
    can you help me ?

  2. “She became friends with everybody. She is the queen of friends!” Am I right? I love figuring out invented spelling! 🙂 We do this at our house too, and my five year old especially loves it. For us it’s a fantastic use for a Lego mini-figure sticker book that someone gave us.

  3. my daughter started doing this on her own recently and I thought it was a fabulous idea! I actually wished I had thought of it myself but it was great that she was inspired on her own with stickers we had in the house.

She has a sticker writing journal and it is great to see how the writing itself is developing, along with the stories. They are becoming more creative/complex with time. It is definitely something I will save for her for later when she is older to look back on.
