Book Summary: Mabel is from a long line of witches and today she is finally old enough to try out to be a witch herself. She can do almost everything a witch should do except for one thing. Will she finally get to wear her very own black, pointy hat? Or will she be the only one in her whole family who isn’t a witch.

The story takes place during a single day as Mabel prepares for and participates in a ritual of maturation from little girl to little witch.

The illustrations are vividly enchanting and quirky. The social – emotional issues it deals with… the fear of failure; the desire to be seen and fit in; the questioning of one’s true identify; the exhilaration when we finally achieve a goal we have been working so diligently to accomplish…are so important for young people. And the heroine, Mabel, is absolutely darling.
