I was so glad to see this post as I have "caught up" on some blog posts made while I was on vacation. Reading Is Fundamental is in our fifth year of a Multicultural initiative where we are working to promote more access to multicultural literature for children. We are basing our work on the paper "Mirrors, Windows, and Sliding Glass Doors" by one of our Literature Advisory Board members, Rudine Sims Bishop of The Ohio University (http://www.rif.org/us/literacy-resources/multicultural/mirrors-windows-and-sliding-glass-doors.htm). You can read more about the overall initiative at http://www.rif.org/us/literacy-resources/multicultural.htm. I hope anyone with ideas for us will share those with us!

What a wonderful interview!
It behooves any person in this globally interactive world to become familiar with other people and cultures. As a child and teen "Third Culture Kid", American by nationality who grew up in various countries in Africa, I relished the multicultural experiences I had. I struggled with the ignorance I encountered every time we visited the 'States, and was appalled by the rudeness I saw exhibited by other Americans when they were visiting other countries.
We can be proud of our own cultural heritage, but none of us can afford to be ethnocentric, not in this day and age, and why would we want to be, when the study of other countries, cultures, and people can make our lives so much richer?
And when kids are exposed to multicultural stories early on, even if they, by virtue of where they live, don't encounter many individuals different from them, it still gives them a better understanding that "normal" can mean many things, and they are thus more empathetic to those they encounter whose lives don't look exactly like their own.
