I think the issue is also reaching to the test which turns science into memorization. NOT what science is all about, but if you turn kids off science by making it rote memorization, they are turned off for good. My state starts testing science in 5th grade.

Writing is the same issue. By 4th grade, my kids are doing “open response” answers which are formulaic responses drilled into them and graded by basically sweat shop graders. This is not writing and certainly doesn’t inspire creativity or good writing.

I could go on and on … sigh! I agree that test scores and high performance correlate directly to income. The higher the income the higher the score. It’s sort of an argument for busing all over again.

I agree with all of this. It’s very discouraging as a teacher and a parent! I was just getting ready to re-enter the workforce as a teacher but after seeing what it’s really
Iike now, I have sadly decided to try to find another job to dedicate my time and efforts to. I am also questioning having my 3 children in the public school system. I’m very disheartened.

Human being learn naturally through creativity, imagination, experimentation and critical thinking or PLAYING. Ironically we have managed to systematically strip away nearly all of those elements from our education system in the name of efficiency and accountability.

Sir Ken Robinson is correct we don’t need education reform, but a revolution in education.

P. S. Don’t forget that you can opt out of standardized testing. thanks i did not know i could opt out for my children. I for one think standard testing is out dated and wrong
