In reply to Karen DeGroot Carter. Thank you to the both of you. It's the first time I've ever commented on a blog so I wasn't sure how it would be received. An additional thought: if there is a community college or university anywhere near your home, they usually have an international student center. Many of these students would love having local friends! When we were stationed in Germany, we invited a German friend and family for Thanksgiving. Even though she had been involved with the military community for over 25 years, we were the first Americans to invite them for Thanksgiving at a HOME! Can you believe it? Don't worry about the mess, just go for the love. :) Thank you for the kind words.

In reply to MS. You're very welcome, MS! I hadn't heard about the base museums. What a great tip! My husband's parents started their family on military bases in the 1960s. I definitely agree that the military was one of the first U.S. institutions to embrace racial diversity, and am very glad they did! Love your comment "Skill counts, not color." Thanks so much!

One thing I have loved about being a military/home educated family is that it is so common to see all colors in all combinations all the time! In my own extended family we have citizens from France, Japan, Ukraine, and Colombia (SA). In this day and age I always assume that: 1. The people with the children are their parents (but I never ask), and family-type groups are related, no matter what their color. Despite it’s problems, the military is probably the most egalitarian group in the country. Skill counts, not skin color. Most military bases have some type of museum. (You generally just need to show a picture id to get on base.) If you go, you will not only see families of all combinations, but also photos and other evidence of the contribution various ethnic groups have made to the history of our country. We’re mostly pink with a little olive (Greek husband.) This article is so great. I think I’m going to buy the “I’m Chocolate, Your Vanilla” book because the title is so darn cute. And for my mostly pink kids, I think this having these types of books will educate my child just as much as a mixed race child. Thanks for posting.
