As a paid Quaker Classroom Ambassador, I’m inviting you to join Quaker in supporting teachers nationwide.
Teachers spend more than $1 billion a year stocking their own classrooms, and they’re buying more than just school supplies!
Teachers are buying food.
Why? Well, three in five K-8 public school teachers say their students regularly come to school hungry, and as a result these teachers typically spend $37 per month from their own paychecks on food for their students.
It’s hard to learn when your stomach is empty.
Inner city teacher, Amanda Boyar shares, “The biggest thing is that they cannot learn when their stomachs are empty and it is almost as if their body goes into survival mode. They fidget, they drum, they stand up and walk around. There are of course many other factors that may affect learning, but I do feel that if the kids would have had a healthy – well, balanced meal before coming to school it would have helped. I have always had a few students who come to school hungry. Our school nurse at my last school would hand out saltines to kids who complained they were hungry, but came to school after the first bell and couldn’t get school lunch. So my kids were learning on saltine fumes…“
Quaker understands the importance of helping to fuel health and wellness in schools – so they are teaming up with AdoptAClassroom.org to help teachers give their students the tools that can help them succeed.

This is such a great way to support teachers — because believe me, we spend a lot on our students! One year when teaching 30 5-year olds, I didn’t have so much as a pencil or crayons. I spent half my salary just stocking the room.

Share with Your Kids – Maddi’s Fridge
I’ve just discovered a fantastic book called Maddi’s Fridge by Lois Brandt. It tells the true story about two friends, one who doesn’t have much food in her fridge and is embarrassed about it. It’s a relatable story about a realistic situation. I think reading it with your own kids will help them empathize with teachers wanting to make sure their students have enough food to eat.
