Of course, as with any schooling situation, there are bad and good examples. I agree with Renee... if a parent is truly dedicated to their child, then THEY are their best teacher.

If a parent is dedicated to their children and has the will to succeed they can overcome many more obstacles than people realize! I have a 4 year degree, but I am still learning right along with my children as I teach them.

While I think you make a valid point (a lot of people sell themselves short on their ability to teach their children), I will have to say the opposite is also true. A lot of people sell themselves far to highly on their ability to teach their children. I have heard people who didn't graduate high school talking about homeschooling their children. (I strongly encouraged them to look at a different school if they were dissatisfied with their current school.) Just because one knows their child(ren) better than anyone else doesn't mean they are qualified to teach them.

After much prayer and talking with my husband, I was bible reading one morning. I was in Proverbs. The first verse I read was Proverbs 14:1. I thought what better way to build my house than to teach my children. :) We pulled our girls out of the public school system the very next day. Much encouragement to you.

I was one of the moms that said, "I would never have the patience to home school my children." I was wrong! Home Schooling is GREAT FUN! We belong to a co-op that has on average between 80-100 home schoolers. My children have blossomed. They have exceeded my expectations. Life is calmer and we have family time again in the evenings because of NO HOMEWORK. (Well, it's ALL homework but don't tell them that!) If you are in the Kansas City Area and would like more info, support and encouragement, Feel free to Email me at Tongiefarm@aol.com. I can hook you up with a great group!

Thank you for this post. I made the decision to stay home and leave my career as an elementary assistant principal last year after we adopted our 2 foster children. Our oldest entered kindergarten this year and I've struggled with keeping him in the system I've spent 15 years trying to make a difference in, or keeping him home where we can accomplish much more in less time and share more of life with each other. I am still praying through it but am encouraged by your article. Will continue my research and prayer. Thanks for the inspiration.
