I agree that middle grade writers and publishers need to bring out more books with male protagonists. While you’re right that boys CAN read books with female main characters, in my library I’m finding that boys are reading these books much less. And, it’s really difficult to find books with male protagonists. Come on people – let’s start seeing more books that truly appeal to our male readers!
Also, thanks for these reviews, especially about the books that seem like they’re appropriate for middle grade, but actually aren’t. At this time when school libraries (and librarians) are under so much scrutiny, it’s really nice to find reviews that help us better choose good books for our kids.

I’m working on an NFMG-in-verse that has a boy as a protagonist.Your comment about needing boy MCs is appreciated. I also appreciate your 2 comments about the MG marketed books that aren’t appropriate for MG. I do want to write for MG and intend to keep the content appropriate for that age range though older MG and Y/A readers may use this text in a classroom.

I will read the 2 you’ve reviewed to avoid the areas you’ve highlighted.
