As your children return back-to-school, you’ll want to read these new picture books, especially Chopsticks by Amy Krouse Rosenthal and Little Sweet Potato by Amy Beth Bloom.
Back to School Books
Teachers, here’s your new first day of school read aloud! It sets the tone for your classroom, that it’s a place for discovery, adventure,
“If we had a schooner, we would have our class at sea
And study the Atlantic, where the great blue whales roam free. // . . .
Our classroom is our vessel,
always headed someplace new. //
Because you are our teacher,
We’ll explore the world with you.”
In typical whimsical rhyme, we learn of the narrator’s firsts: riding a two-wheeler, first pet, first poop pick-up, first day in first grade, first friends, first lie, first pony shoe, first bee sting, and more. She ends with “First things first happen when I’m brave, true, and strong.” I love it. It may be one of my new favorites of the duo’s books. So hard to say because their books are all so incredible.
Chopsticks are always together. But when one chopstick gets injured, he encourages his partner chopstick to go explore the world alone.
“Unexpectedly, being apart made each of them even stronger. // And not only that, they realized how many great new things they could now share!”
I love this book to help children learn about friendships. That friends, even when apart, can be okay – stronger, even. Plus, it’s a punny story. You’ll get some good giggles.
Poor Little Sweet Potato, he’s rolled away from his home and all the other plants he meets make fun of him. The carrots say, “You are lumpy, dumpy, and – we have to say it- you’re bumpy.” The eggplants say, “We are handsome and purple with skin like satin. And the fact is you are dumpy, bumpy, and kind of lumpy.” The flowers laugh and say the same thing.
Just as Little Sweet Potato think he’s never going to fit in, he hears a voice – “Hey, you! . . . Bumpalicious! . . . You’re sweet, you’re neat, and you’ve got that gorgeous sunset color. You’re a sweet potato. Now roll on over here.” Here is the hodge-podge patch, a warm and friendly place that like all kinds of plants. Little Sweet Potato is home.
A rhyming book to introduce children to preschool. You’ll read about all the things that happen at preschool– Time for Preschool, Circle Time, Sharing Time, Manners, Fire Drill, Thinking-about-Home Time, Time for Friends, Nap Time, Field Trip Time, Time to Make Stuff, Clean-up Time, Time to Go Home. Fun!
