I love multicultural books that not only represent the diversity in our world but teach us about other cultures! Language Lizard recently sent me a wonderful multicultural story called Welcome to the World Baby by Na’ima bint Robert and illustrated by Derek Brazell. It’s a fantastic picture book to read with children who are expecting new siblings as well as children who are learning about the five senses.
It’s especially exciting for me to share this book with you today because it’s Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2017 (1/27/18)! MCBD is in its 5th year and was founded by Valarie Budayr from Jump Into A Book and Mia Wenjen from PragmaticMom. Our mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in home and school bookshelves while also working diligently to get more of these types of books into the hands of young readers, parents and educators.
Welcome to the World Baby is about a boy named Tariq whose family has just had a new baby. After Tariq shares this at school, his teacher asks Tariq’s classmates to share what special cultural traditions they have to welcome a new baby. She asks them to think of how those traditions relate to the five senses. The children share things like tasting an aloe leaf and honey to learn that life can be bitter but also sweet. Or for touch, a girl shares a smooth red egg that her family gives for good luck.
Welcome to the World Baby is also a dual language book meaning it’s written in two languages, in this case English and Albanian. If you’re Albanian, it helps improve your literacy in your family’s home language. If you’re not, it introduces you to the Albanian language. The book can be ordered in English paired with any of 27 languages including Hindi, Japanese, and Urdu. ORDER IT HERE.

I can really get behind Language Lizard‘s mission! This publishing company supports multicultural families, boosting home language development and literacy skills. Language Lizard also hopes to support educators who work in culturally diverse schools, providing resources build inclusive classrooms.
To that end, they provide bilingual books (=one language, the child’s home langue) and dual language books (= two languages, English + another language) in SO MANY languages! English and one of these following 40+ languages:
Language Lizard offers PENpal interactive book options, too. These sound amazing. They’re books with audio files. You can make and listen to audio files of the book as you read. Kids use the pen to touch the words and they’ll hear the story.
Visit Language Lizard to see all the beautiful books they offer. You’ll find board books, contemporary stories, folk tales, stories of faith and celebration, first experiences, and more.

“This year, as with every year, we are striving more persistently than ever to place as many books into children’s hands as possible. Our unwavering mission is to share our love of reading from a multicultural perspective while also sharing the storytelling talents of authors and publishers alike.” Mia Wenjen (MCBD Co-founder)
“Through each multicultural book a child reads, it creates a new level of understanding and empathy. When we can see through the eyes of another, when we can share a loved book with a friend regardless of religion, culture, race etc, we create a sense of belonging not only in our classrooms and homes but more importantly in our communities. The world outside our window becomes ours to shape and create.” Valarie Budayr (MCBD Co-Founder)
