I was just thinking of this today when my K student (who is in a K-1 Combo Class at a STEM School) shared that he doesn’t get center time, circle time, or music/movement time. I felt so sad about that. He just comes home DESPERATE for someone to play.

Fantastic. LOVE the line that SOCIAL SKILLS are a better predictor of later academic achievement. As an SLP, I have this discussion often with parents. Yes, that is great that they can name all of the ____________ BUT let’s make sure they also can run, initiate play and have some nonsensical fun as well. After teaching in Head Start for seven years, I taught at a church-based Mother’s Day Out program. Believing that children learn through play, I set up my classroom much like the Head Start classrooms I had been in. After several months, I was asked by the director to change my teaching method to be more academic-based (worksheets), because the parents thought all the children did was ‘play’ and would not be ready for kindergarten! It would have been easier to run copies of worksheets for the children to do than plan, prepare and provide the many activities I had available for the children to explore. I resigned!

Interesting article! I am a preschool teacher and administrator and run a preschool that is a combination of both academic and child centered. The kiddos have plenty of time for self discovery of things in the room but also a time for learning what they need to learn for kindergarten.
