Research proves that movement is an important part of learning. Not only as a teaching tool (kinesthetic learning), but as a way to stimulate the brain for improved learning. Now, a new, free website filled with teacher resources and lessons, fit4Schools, hopes to contribute positively to movement in schools and to educate students about healthy lifestyles.
fit4Schools is a health activation program from Sanford Health developed in collaboration with WebMD. It provides movement ideas for teachers to take active breaks as well as tons of free healthy living teaching materials for students and families.
Daily fitBoost for Classrooms
fitBoost is a fun way for a teacher to incorporate movement. Go to the website and find the fitBoost area. Click “Let’s Go” and your students will be given random exercises to do for a certain period of time. (There’s a timer to make it easy.)
The warm-up, move, and cool down all will be random activities. The screen shot below shows the cool down (blue color) activity — the cobra pose.
fit4Schools Resources for Teachers
The teaching materials on the fit4Schools website are organized into four healthy living areas: Mood, Food, Move, and Recharge. And it’s all FREE and quite extensive.
FOOD: what and how much you eat (color coded green)
MOVE: exercise, play, and physical activity (color coded red)
You’ll find tons of topics to use in your classroom. I’m assuming this is elementary but the lessons don’t specify grade levels or ages. The lessons do say to which standard they correspond and the background knowledge needed.
Here’s some of what you’ll see for #3. Food is Fuel.
As you can see, the fit4Schools website provides a teacher’s guide, student handouts, and quite a bit more! Below continues just some of the resources available for this one topic.
