Fans of the middle-grade fantasy series, Fablehaven by Brandon Mull, will love the newest companion book called The Caretaker’s Guide to Fablehaven arriving in bookstores October 13, 2015. It’s the essential guide to Fablehaven so if you want to be a caretaker, or just play one on TT, or just read the books, it’s a must-own.
Caretaker’s Guide is a beautifully designed tome with paper that looks like worn, aged parchment. Lovely sketches illustrate many of the entries. Handwritten notes from the characters and creatures of Fablehaven in the margins make the entries more interesting. (Guess which statyr makes comments?)
You’ll also discover written wisdom from Grandma Sorenson and Grandpa Sorenson meant to guide you as a Fablehaven caretaker. For example, “None of these creatures are good. Not the way we think of good. None are safe. Much of morality is peculiar to mortality. The best creatures here are merely not evil.” – Grandpa Sorenson. There’s more wisdom from previous caretakers as well like, “Questions that start with “why” are the toughest to answer. You end up guessing more than knowing.” – Dale.
Reading this book with these notes will take you back to the stories. For me, it made me want to reread the series again. Right now. I loved how much The Caretaker’s Guide to Fablehaven reminded me of each book in the series.
Contents of The Caretaker’s Guide to Fablehaven
Artifacts & Items
This section contains artifacts like the Key to the Inverted Tower, Pixie Cocoon, Sage’s Gauntlets, and the Sands of Sanctity for which Seth writes in the margins, “Be careful who you heal!”
Starting with the Alcetaur which is like a centaur but with the body of a moose, and continuing to Zombie, this section lists and describes all the mythical creatures in and out of Fablehaven as well as magical plants such as the Stingbulb and Chokepod
Since demons almost took over the world, most demons are locked in Zzyzx but there are some demons who aren’t and some who are at Fablehaven, too, Bahumat being one of the most powerful there. He’s frightening!
You’ll learn more about dragons as well as the different types of dragons in this part of the book.
You might be wondering what this means — it’s talking bout the places important to mythical creatures like Wyrmroost, a dragon sanctuary, as well as locations in Fablehaven like Grunhold, the home of the centaurs surrounded by a protective ring of stone.
Did you know that all true wizards were once dragons? This is a short section with several powerful wizards listed as well as The Society of the Evening Star explained.
As you read, try to find all the magical fairies — they’ll give you clues to the next sequel series, Dragonwatch.
