Please consider adding picture book ALWAYS TOGETHER to this list. It’s about two otters who are always connected, always sharing, always together until suddenly they are not. One is left behind and nothing is the same. It is a sweet story appropriate for all types of loss and separation, including relocation, deployment, family break up, illness, and death. Please see the review by School Library journal and sample illustrations on my website, www.patriciakreiser.com. Thank you, kindly!

I am surprised that "Bug in a Vacuum" is not on the list by Melanie Watts. She actually goes through the 5 stages of grief in this book. I have used it for many grades.

Carolyn,
It depends on what you're needing. A picture book can be meaningful for older kids and digestible -- but some kids wouldn't want to read picture books. There are many, many fiction books about grief and loss which I could recommend. Would that be something you want? And if so, is there a specific kind of situation?

Yes. I also read Freddy the Leaf as a child (I still own my copy 30 years later) and it greatly impacted me. It is a beautiful book.
