A DAY FOR READING!? What luxury, what bliss! Penguin Random House and the National Book Foundation have collaborated to invent my new favorite holiday.

National Readathon Day!

Well, it’s not really a holiday but a way to raise money for literacy programs like BookUp which provides books to middle school kids. Because did you know that while 53% of 9-year-olds read for pleasure daily, at age 17, that number drops to 19%? Yikes!

Go here to pledge. Teams can do even this!

National Readathon Day is Saturday, January 24, 2015 from noon – 4 pm EST

You and your kids are doing it with me. Right?

Get your kids a kazillion or one books and have them read for four hours this Saturday from noon to four — or whenever works for your schedule.

Perhaps a trip to the library or bookstore is in order on Saturday morning?

What Books Should My Child Read for Readathon?

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — let your child pick out their own books!!! Of course, you already know that! 🙂

The only exception to this is IF they are picking out books that they can’t comprehend because they’re too difficult. Then you can save the book for later and help them make a better choice. (Start with the five finger test if you find that helpful.)

Use my book lists by age to get you and your child started with ideas for a book to read — there are so many titles and all have reviews.

Books for 5- and 6- year olds
Books for 7-year olds
Books for 8-year olds
Books for 9-year olds
Books for 10-year olds
Books for 11-year olds
Books for 12-year olds
YA Books

Happy reading!
