Do You Know About Harry Potter Fan Fiction?

It’s time to introduce your kids who areĀ fans of Harry Potter to writing HARRY POTTER Fan Fiction.

Why?

Because it gets them writing and stretching their imaginations.

Both are very good things.

Oh, and did I mention it’s tons of fun? Especially if you write with your friends.

Harry Potter Fanfiction Gets Kids Writing

What is fan fiction, or fanfic?

Fan fiction is fictionĀ written by fans of the original worksĀ that takes parts of the original story (characters, settings, etc.) and reimagines a new story. Cross-over fanfic is when the story takes more than one original story and merges the two – Harry Potter characters with Percy Jackson characters, for example.

And, believe it or not, fan fiction can actually be a way to break into the world of publishing. Cassandra Clare, YA author, started out writing fan fiction. So did YA author, Meg Cabot. Cool, huh? (Oh, and Neil Gaiman has published fanfiction before, too.)

If you’re worried about what J.K. Rowlings thinks about Harry Potter Fan Fiction, don’t be.Ā According to her book agency, “JK Rowling’s reaction is that she is very flattered by the fact there is such great interest in her Harry Potter series and that people take the time to write their own stories.”Ā She says she’s fine withĀ fanfiction as long as it does not contain racism or pornography.

There you go. (Some authors do mind, but not Rowlings.)

Tips for Writing Harry Potter Fanfic

HARRY POTTER FAN FICTION

1. Pick a story (such as Harry Potter), also called a fandom, and that will determine the characters you will write about.

2.Ā UnderstandĀ that the storyĀ works better if the basics in the canon aren’t changed (eg. a character’s personality, looks, way of speaking, etc.). Look at the Harry Potter LexiconĀ to get the sense of things that are basics that shouldn’t be altered. Draco Malfoy, for example, isn’t a hugger who speaks with a lisp.

3. However, if you want the story to be changed up so much that it doesn’t follow the canon, this is called fanfiction AU or Alternate Universe.

4. Plot your story. Ask questions like “What if ____________ happened?” or “What would __________ do if __________ occured?”

Action – Problem – Resolution

5. Write.

6. Revise. Read other people’s fanfic to inspire how your story could be improved. One of the best Harry Potter fanfiction stories are the James Potter books, available for free on Goodreads.

7. Edit. (Grammar, spelling, punctuation.)

8. Publish on a fanfic site. You can read and publish your fan fiction on Harry Potter Fanfiction and Fanfiction.net. I would only recommend this for teens due to the comments and variety of material on these sites. Some fanfiction stories are not appropriate for kids. Rating systems apply!

  1. Fanfiction is so amazing. I highly recommend a site called Quotev.com, it is an excellent site for Fanfiction. Though, a quick warning, some of the stories are not appropriate for children, and they don’t always come with a warning, so for younger children Ao3 (archiveofourown) would be betted, since those almost always have a warning if there’s adult content.

  2. Respectfully, why stop at the Harry Potter fandom? There are so many fandoms to choose from for popular book, tv shows, and movies, you just need to know how to find kid friendly fanfics. Without even knowing what fanfic was, when I was 9, I started writing a fanfiction after seeing the movie Honey I Shrunk The Kids (I’m not that old I’m 13, okay?) about what would happen if the PBS Kids characters got shrunk. A couple years ago in writing class, I was assigned to write a story about the book Number The Stars, it was basically a fanfiction. Fanfiction is all around us, it’s not limited to one fanbase šŸ™‚

  3. I wrote my first fanfiction when I was in 3rd grade. I’m seventeen now, and I’ve probably read over a million fanfics, while still writing constantly. I believe that fanfic is a beautiful way to not only get grow their imaginations, but think constantly about where their paths can go, and what you can do when you put your mind to it. It teaches you to be in love with your own life.

  4. My granddaughter said she wanted my son to start reading her the Harry Potter books. I’m so excited! Now he’ll finally read them! šŸ™‚
