Why the Slackline is My Kids’ Favorite Backyard Activity

One summer we bought a Slackers slackline for the girls thinking core strength would be good for everyone. What I didn’t plan on was it being so much FUN and it being the kids’ favorite backyard activity for months and months and months.

The slackline stretches between two trees like a tightrope but is stretchy and bouncy. You can ratchet the line so it fits the distance. We also use the guided teaching line above so the kids can hold on when they lose their balance.

The kids love to walk across the sideways, backward, and frontward — balancing and holding on both. To minimize the bounce, an adult can sit on one end of the line.

The only rule we have is that big sister can’t bounce the line while younger kids are on.

Sometimes it’s nice just to rest. Well, rest and bounce, of course.

Also, it’s easy to set up and take down — which we do weekly for lawn mowing.

So for a fun, active summer, we highly recommend the slackline!

Gibbon Slackline has some cool slackline videos.

Here’s an intro video for kids on YouTube.

We are SOLD on the slackline. Not only is it building up muscles, coordination, and core strength — it’s like a siren’s song calling my kids outside to play.

What do you think — would you want a slackline for kids in your backyard, too?

  1. This is great for future athletes , dancers or just a little back yard fun! I love it thank you for sharing!

  2. Melissa, I’ve never heard of this and it DOES look like so much fun! Well, not for me at this point, but definitely! Have you ever tried climbing the nets at Sesame Place? I used to love that (though it’s not easy with fibromyalgia) and the rest of that park. I miss it!

  3. Great reasons to slack line. My kid is now 3.5 years old so I will soon be getting him more into the slack line. I have been waiting for him to get old enough to a point I think he can start balancing. He’s been on it a few times.

I’ve got a 100 ft line with 20 ft anchors in case there is a really big tree i need to wrap around.

    1. maybe a fence post that is deep enough in the ground? I am really not sure. However, there are slack lines that don’t require trees, they look like balance beams and are portible.

  4. So happy to see this review of the slack line. We were thinking of putting one in our pediatric therapy clinic. And it will be nice to show our families how they can also do this in the back yard. How fun!

    1. I think it would be great for kids! And the cost to do one is very little depending on what you get. They have ratcheting ones, which are easier and quicker to setup, but slightly more expensive.
