When I said I wanted a slow summer, I did not envision getting a nasty Epstein Barr virus forcing me to be slow from fatigue. Since I wasn’t at my parenting best, I relied on my husband, our wonderful babysitter, and educational learning tools to help.
Even though it’s recommended for ages 2 – 6, my girls ages 8 and 11 totally loved this app.
And I loved that Dr. Alice Wilder, formerly Head of Research & Testing for Blue’s Clues, developed the Speakaboos curriculum. I knew from the start, this app was one I could trust.
The biggest reason my kids enjoyed this app so much was due to the wide variety and selection of stories – something for every interest and age group. Plus, each story features lots of fun things to hear, watch, and do.
The stories on the iPad include categories like: Animals, Princesses, Vehicles, Friends and Family, Music, The Changing Seasons, Fantasy, Sports, Monsters, Bugs, Little Pim French, Gustofer Yellowgold, and Judy and Friends, just to name a few. (Seriously, it’s a lot!)
All the stories are animated in some way with a narrator reading the story. Some stories are videos like the Space Race series that teaches kids about the planets — my kids especially love these. Other stories are more like picture books with moving parts.
Kids can follow along with the text. Words are highlighted at the bottom of the screen.
Besides stories, you’ll find all sorts of engaging songs. Our current favorite is “Is it a pirate or a parrot?”
The load time is slow for each story so be patient. It’s worth it.
You can get the Speakaboos app for free and try 3 stories to see if your kids like it. After that, there’s a subscription plan.
· 1 Month Subscription – $4.99
· 6 Month Subscription – $24.99
· 1 Year Subscription – $24.99
Speakaboos isn’t going to teach your kids to read, but it’s edu-tainment at it’s best — and in my opinion as a teacher and parent, much better than mindless video games.
