Writing Lesson: Beginning, Middle, End

Read only the beginning of a picture book with limited words. I read Children Make Terrible Pets by Peter Brown.

Stop.

Talk about how the beginning introduces the character and setting. Ask, “Where will your story take place? Who will be in your story?” Use the erasers to get ideas.

Talk. Draw. Write.

Read the middle of the picture book.

Stop.

Talk about the middle of a story. The middle is the action, usually a problem. Ask, “What is going to happen in your story? Is there a big problem?”

Talk. Draw. Write.

Read the end of the picture book.

Talk about what made it an ending and why you couldn’t have ended the story in the middle. Ask, “How are you going to end your story?”

Talk. Draw. Write.

Share your stories. Read for bedtime. Keep in your bookshelf. Celebrate your creativity!

  1. I’ve been eyeing all of those fun erasers (I see a bunch in Target’s dollar spot, too) and have been wondering what we could do with them. Thanks for the inspiration! And for sharing with the Kids Co-Op.

  2. Love this idea! Adding it to our summer bucket list for a rainy day activity.
