Bob Books #1 Reading Magic (Learning Touch)
READING
I really like this reading app and so does JJ. Each page shows a sentence plus a black and white drawing. Then, the child must spell the individual word. When she clicks on the letter, the letter and sound are spoken. Then, when the word is spelled, the letters, sounds, and word are all repeated out loud again and the object gets colored in. If you spell all the words, the whole page turns a color. Great for beginning readers!

MiniMo Town
SPELLING
$1.99

This app starts out with CVC words like saw and cat so it’s only appropriate for a small range of children who want to learn or spell the 150 words in the game. However, it’s fun and interactive with cute kid-friendly images.

Toontastic 3D

WRITING, CREATIVE THINKING
ages 6 – 8
FREE
My daughter remembers learning story arc from the first Toontastic. This updated version also gives kids a simple or harder story arc as well as a science report structure. Pick a setting, add characters, then tell your story (yes, out loud) while moving your characters around the setting with your finger to act out the narrative. Add music (you’ll love the choices) and then finish your mini-movie! We like the selection of characters (and that you can make your own) as well as the high-quality graphics. This is a fun, engaging app that will spark children’s creative thinking.

WRITING, SELF-EXPRESSION

$2.99
Like the print version, this app gives kids journal prompts to share about who they are, what they like, and their world right now. Will this get your kids writing? It just might!

Don’t Let the Pigeon Run This App
WRITING
ages 4+
$5.99
You might think that this is a book app but it’s not. It’s a creative storytelling app. Basically, kids create their own stories with either the Egg, Chick, or Big Pigeon. Then, the bus driver asks the kids questions which are recorded. Later, the main character and the recorded answers become a unique, new story. It turns out so cute and very funny as you might expect.

This entertaining app has 5 levels of games which introduce kids to spelling concepts such as short vowels and letter blends. Engaging but only good for beginning readers and writers since it can’t be customized.

Educational Apps
Scribblenaut Remix
PROBLEM SOLVING, WRITING, SPELLING
ages 9+
$.99 / in-app purchases
I think this is our favorite educational app yet! It’s such a clever concept. To solve the puzzles in each scene and level, you need to imagine what your player needs. Then, you type that in — and voila! it appears! So, you might type in dinosaur or hammer. It’s great for spelling, writing, imagination, and problem-solving!

PROBLEM SOLVING, WRITING

Android
$4.99
We mostly like this app because it requires creative problem solving to advance. Basically, you must help your character advance by writing in words (adjectives or nouns) to solve the problems he encounters. My daughter would prefer to have a female character option and found some of the solutions glitchy. However, it’s an engaging game requiring thinking which is always a good thing.
