Welcome to our 6th annual Multicultural Children’s Book Day! I can’t wait to tell you about a beautiful multicultural picture book I’m reading and a Twitter party we’re having tonight.

A Morning with Grandpa
by Sylvia Liu, illustrated by Christina Forshay is an absolutely lovely picture book from Lee and Low!

What strikes me immediately about this picture book is the warm-hearted, loving relationship between the grandpa and the granddaughter. Even when the granddaughter does things differently than her grandpa, he is very accepting of her silly ways. And vice-versa. In the end, they both learn from each other during their morning practices of Tai Chi and Yoga. Because it’s about being together, trying your best, and not being perfect.

First, they practice Tai Chi.
A little girl named Mei Mei joins her grandpa, Gong Gong, for his morning routine of Tai Chi, a martial arts practice that sends good energy through your body.

Gong Gong stepped from side to side and carefully moved his arms back and forth. He was a warm summer breeze gently blowing through the trees.

Mei Mei was a frisky fall wind tumbling among the leaves.

Then, they do Yoga.
Later, Mei Mei asks Gong Gong to do yoga with her.

Mei Mei planted her hands and feet on the ground and shaped her body into an upside-down letter V. She stood like a guard dog, strong and steady.

“Gong Gong tried to bend into a V shape too. He wobbled like an old dog, creaky at the knees.”

Isn’t this sweet? I wish that all kids could have such a rich grandparent-child relationship like in this story.

Another Tai Chi Book for Kids

If you want to read another beautiful story about both Tai Chi and the grandparent-child relationship, I highly recommend Crouching Tiger by Ying Chang Compestine.

I’ve searched for more but I don’t have any other titles to suggest. Do you?

If your kids are interested in yoga, Yoga Whale by Sarah Jane Hinder is a new, darling little interactive book of yoga poses that just like Mei Mei knows, are named after animals. Specifically sea animals. Learn to do a Jellyfish or Dolphin pose or breathe like a Pufferfish. The illustrations show kids doing the poses; each accompanied by a little poem.

Yoga and Tai Chi help regulate breathing. Breathe with Me by Mariam Gates is a new book that makes breathing accessible to children with powerful imagery kids can understand.

For example, when you’re sleepy in the morning and can’t wake up — try doing Rainbow Breath. Illustrated with a girl sitting under a rainbow we read about Rainbow Breath:

“Sit up and let your spine grow tall.

Bring your arms out straight to
the sides, palms down.

Inhale and sweep your arms up over your head palm to palm.

Exhale and bring your arms back
straight out to the sides, palms down.

Repeat three times.

Or when you’re nervous about something new, try Dandelion Breath. (I LOVE the idea of blowing a dandelion, don’t you?)

The book has five different ways to think about your breathing in total. And I think they’re all so brilliantly relatable for kids.
