Picture Books About Animals

this is a moose
This Is a Moose
by Richard T. Morris, illustrated by Tom Lichtenheld
Hilarious picture book! This is a moose. Who wants to be an astronaut. But the narrator of this book says no way and neither can giraffes, who shouldn’t be in the woods in the first place, be doctors. The narrator gets more irked in this silly adventure.

cat says meow
Cat Says Meow and other an*i*mal*o*poe*ia

How do I describe this unique typographic picture book of animal sounds and shapes? Well, prepare to be dazzled as you find the word in the animal image. Hear onomatopoeia and see animalopoeia! I LOVE this picture book! (Added to: Best Children’s Picture Books About Figurative Language

Happy Little Duck loves to give his friends gifts to help – a nest hat to protect Beaver’s head, bread for Squirrel who lost her nuts, or a feather so mouse can write a poem with the nub. And his friends return his love and give their own gifts to Little Duck just when he needs it. Very sweet picture book about animal friends.

Aviary Wonders Inc. Spring Catalog & Instruction Manual
by Kate Samworth
In a word, quirky. Once you understand that you can’t really order bird parts to assemble your own bird, you’ll find this so-called “catalog” to be quite entertaining, and informative. Even in it’s satire, readers learn about species and parts of birds, meant to educate readers on the loss of habitat and bird species. Beautifully illustrated!

Is This Panama? A Migration Story
by Jan Thornhill, illustrated by Soyeon Kim
A well-written narrative picture book story about Sammy, a Wilson’s warbler, who lives near the Arctic Circle. He knows he needs to migrate to Panama before the cold comes but he can’t find any other warblers. He starts flying and asks many animals where to find Panama (caribou, dragonflies, a snake, and monarch butterflies.) Love the information mixed in with the fictional story!

Busy Bunny Days In the Town, On the Farm & At the Port

JJ and I enjoyed reading and searching through this seek and find adventure. We liked the repeating characters and the mysteries to solve.

Presto Change-o! a book of animal magic
by Edouard Manceau
We love this magical book of illustrated surprises where you move the shapes and turn the object into an animal. Turn the hot-air balloon into a rabbit, the bowl of salad into a turtle, or the bubbling pot into a raccoon. Delightful!

Have You Heard the Nesting Bird?
by Rita Gray, illustrated by Kenard Pak
“Have you heard the nesting bird? ask the children about the robin on her nest. As they watch her, they hear the call of other birds — the “chiddik, chiddik” of sparrow, the “ha-ha-chit-chit-chit” of swallow, the “cheer-cheer-cheer-purdy-purdy-purdy” or cardinal, and many others. But they don’t hear anything from robin until a tapping, cracking, hatching. Great use of rhythm and perfect ratio of words to pictures. Lovely.

A charming story with a lesson to which we can all relate: Even mothers of lots of baby penguins — who are very fun and playful – need some alone time once and awhile!

bears big bottom
Bear’s Big Bottom
by Steve Smallman & Emma Yarlett
I don’t know about your kids but mine crack up at talk of “bottoms” (and farts, and all that!) So, right away we loved this story of the lovable, well-intentioned Bear with a bottom that causes all sorts of disasters such as squishing his friends and smashing presents at his friend’s birthday party. But just when Bear thinks that his friends will be forever mad, he saves them from the bottom-nipping fox. (Hooray for Bear’s Big Bottom!)

lost little penguin
Lost Little Penguin
by Tracey Corderoy, illustrated by Gavin Scott
Actually, this isn’t really a story about a lost penguin. It’s a story of a penguin named Plip who loses his favorite cuddly toy and a surprising discovery when he finds it! Lovely.
