When your child is struggling academically in school, tutoring is one of the best options. And you’ll want a referral for that tutor. Then you’ll want to be sure they’re qualified to instruct your child, safe (background check done,) AND good at building rapport and relationship with children.
Well, I have a GREAT tutoring referral for you. A highly-qualified, good-with-kids tutor that comes to your house –via the computer.
It’s called MindLaunch.
MindLaunch custom matches a U.S. licensed, certified teacher with your K-12 student, college student, or even you in almost any subject area.
Whether you’re looking to catch your child up, find challenges for a gifted child, prepare for tests like ISEE, AP, SAT, or ACT, or write your college application essay, MindLaunch matches students and academic need with the perfect tutor.
One of the reasons I am so impressed with MindLaunch is because the tutoring instructors have at least 5 years of teaching experience and are hired after a rigorous application, interview, and training process which includes a background check (this is very important). 75% of the tutors have Master’s Degrees, 15% have PhDs.
Another really important feature that I liked with the MindLaunch tutoring is that ALL sessions are recorded. This gives you, the parent, the opportunity to see what’s going on during each session. It provides the student with a resource to use if she needs to go back and rewatch something. And, it gives MindLaunch a way to audit and evaluate all their tutoring instructors.
MindLaunch Tutoring Session
I got to experience a sample MindLaunch tutoring session last week. It’s the coolest process! I was one on one with my “tutor” using an online tool called WebEx. Not only did we get to see each other’s faces, we used an interactive white board, and both of us made notations on the example document of work.
(My screen shots disappeared from my program so these aren’t unfortunately my session- but these other shots will give you the gist._
1. You and your instructor will be one-on-one via 2-way video.
This is not a webinar – it’s live, one-on-one instruction.
2. You both can see and write on multiple interactive white boards like this map example below.
3. You both can upload and interact with documents and notes as well.
Once the session ends, the student and parents receive a post-session report and video copy of the session.
More MindLaunch Details
I immediately clicked with the founder of MindLaunch, Elaine Sigal, a master teacher with 42 years teaching experience. She knows about quality instruction and she won’t compromise on the level of service she offers. (Yay!)
Sigal explained to me, “This is not rote learning like some tutoring places. We teach you how to fish — how to write a paper. That’s what the college kids are lacking. . . . We are empowering children to become wonderful learners. . . . I’ve never had anyone ask for their money back.”
“We are not the cheapest. But we are the best.”
MindLaunch is a concierge-type service according to Sigal. So if you’re a high school student studying for the SAT, a middle school student with dyslexia, an elementary school student who is gifted and talented, or a mom looking for resume help, MindLaunch has tutors for you.
Also, if a student has an IEP or 504, MindLaunch asks for a copy which is kept secure where only the teacher, Sigal, and the principal-educator have access.
Many homeschoolers come to MindLaunch, shares Sigal, for subjects like phonics and advanced math. Not only that, Sigal explains that MindLaunch offers instruction for homeschool parents to learn how to teach a particular subject such as teaching writing or marking a high-school essay.
Sigal walked me through the MindLaunch platform and I found it really easy to schedule a session, make payments, and track tutoring progress.
Parents can pay for 1 session or 40 sessions at a time. Sessions vary between $29 to $99 per session, depending on how many sessions, and if it’s a group or 1:1 class.
When a child starts MindLaunch tutoring, both child and parents receive a free training session on how to use the WebEx program.
“We had a dad who said his 7th grade son didn’t like reading. The dad said his son didn’t need remediation, he need inspiration. I knew the perfect tutor for him would be Marsha, a licensed K-8 teacher and licensed librarian who specialized in middle school. The dad said after 3 sessions, his son couldn’t wait to come back and read!”
Each family is assigned a principal educator who will answer any and all questions. If a family wants to change tutors for any reason, which has happened one time because of a gender preference, MindLaunch is more than willing to switch you immediately.
MindLaunch paid me to write about them — but these are truly my own opinions. (You would know if I didn’t like them – I would have never recommended them, just written the basic facts and made it boring.) But, I was really impressed – and that can’t be bought! MindLaunch is a service I would and will use with my own children.
