An Awesome Resource, Newmark Learning’s Early Readers

I’m impressed with the selection and quality of Newmark Learning early readers books. I know they’re good because they passed the JJ test. JJ, my first grader, especially loved the nursery rhyme books mentioned below – the Around the Clock Fiction Kit.

Around the Clock Fiction Kit
There are 8 Nursery Rhyme Books of fun and funny stories expanding on the original nursery rhymes. Plus, the illustrations are really cute.

This kit includes: Mary Had a Little Lamb, Hey Diddle Diddle, Hickory Dickory Dock, Baa Black Sheep, Humpty Dumpty, Old Mother Hubbard, Star Light, Star Bright, Sing a Song of Sixpence.

Each story shows the original nursery rhyme before it begins the adapted tale.

The last page suggests activities to build language and comprehension.

Also, the kit has a parent guide and a student journal. It retails for $35.00.

For example, we enjoyed reading:

Old Mother Hubbard adapted by Carrie Smith, illustrated by Vincent Vigla
This silly story of the Hubbards tells what happens before the dog doesn’t get his bone. Here are two pages of text. (Page break indicated with //.)

The Hubbards like to eat snacks.
“Would you like some cookies?” asked Old Mother Hubbard.
“Yes, I like cookies!” said Old Father Hubbard. //
Old Mother Hubbard went
to the cookie jar.
“We have cookies!” she said.
“Yum! I like cookies!” said
Old Father Hubbard.

Suggested activities for Old Mother Hubbard (showing 2 of 3):

  • Talk About . . . Story Elements
Where does this story take place? Who is this story mainly about? How does the story end?
  • Make Connections
What snack in this story do you like best? What other snacks to you like to eat?

Other Early Reader Titles and Sets . . .

Rising Readers Set B Complete Set
Here’s a combination of fiction and non-fiction titles – 48 in all. You’ll see the Nursery Rhyme Tales and books about Science, Social Studies, and Math.

The non-fiction books use photos which in my experience work very well to engage children. Have you noticed that as well? I really like that!

You’ll find titles like: The Sounds We Hear, What is Next?, Look at Our Coins, What’s Left?, Need It or Want It?.

This is more expensive at $165.00 but would be great for a classroom library.

How Many Fruits? by Anne Diorio
I have 1 watermelon. // I have 2 bananas. // I have 3 oranges.

What Can a Bird See by John Serrano
“A bird can see streets. //A bird can see fields. // A bird can see mountains.”
Great introduction of perspective and geographical features, right? This title is from the Newmark Learning Geography Theme Set with these titles: What Can a Bird See?, My Maps, Where Are You?, North, South, East, and West.
