Here Come the Hula Hoops

The hula hoops arrived last week, specially made from sprinkler tubing and made extra big for easier hooping. Look at these HUGE hoops — pink and purple for the girls and yellow for us! (They’re also dancing along to last week’s VBS CD while hooping.)

Jeff’s the president of the Colorado Governor’s Council for Physical Fitness and they had a big Art of Fitness extravaganza at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival which involved a lot of hula hooping. His vice president, Jacqui Shumway, made our new hula-hoops — she said it took around 30 minutes to make one hoop.

Directions for making your own hula-hoop.

If you’re not up for making your own, here are some hula hoop shops recommended by Squidoo.

Please don’t waste your money with the $1.99 hoops at the drug-store — you want bigger and heavier, they’re much easier, especially for us grown-ups! Also, be careful if you buy a weighted hula-hoops. I bought one and it had huge bumps on the inside of the hoop making it quite painful to use! What’s that all about?

Benefits of Hooping

Hoopers (yes, it’s a “lifestyle”) told Jeff that 8 minutes of hooping burns the same amount of calories as running a mile. Whether or not that’s true, it’s most definitely a cardio-vascular workout. One that is more like play than work!

Inside Hooping Tip:

Move the furniture. We have our furniture pushed to the edges of our living room so there is plenty of room for hooping. We originally moved it for the mini-tramp and balance balls for AJ’s SPD Occupational Therapy.

Look, mom! I can jump hoop, too!

Grown-ups — this is a good workout for us, too. I’m going to jump on the hooping band-wagon, want to join me? Time Magazine explains what the hoopla is all about. (Ha, ha, I’m hilarious. Sorry, I just couldn’t resist.) Here is a huge list of hoop exercises for adults.

I admit- I can be caught with a hoola hoop, every once in awhile. Now that I know that it is sport, I feel much better. He, he!

Hoola hoops are such wholesome retro fun, like jump roping! It’s such a great activity to get children outside in the fresh air too. Looks like your children are having a hoola hoop blast!

This looks so fun and thank you for giving a list to get hula hoops. I don’t know why but it is so hard to find decent hula hoops around here! My kids love them and they wear out. I think I found poor quality ones at the drug store or iParty. I will order more from your list of resources. Thank you! It brings back good memories plus is a fun way to exercise. Viva la hula hoop!

I was looking for a way to make my own hula hoop and I got all caught up in hooping videos
when I ran across this fun hooping flash mob: http://youtu.be/SBhkkjLEzb0 . I’m just a beginner,
so this is not something I can do, yet. When I can, I want to mob my own city!
