I’ve been drooling at the thought of a this writer’s conference in San Miguel de Allende with Joan Dideon and Sandra Cisneros. I love both writers and really love San Miguel de Allende – it’s a beautiful little town. I saw my first Mexican parade there and was almost killed by torpedoed candy. Aaaah. Good times.
The conference got me thinking. What if schools had writing conferences for their young writers? Days with opportunities to select from developmentally appropriate sessions that interested each child?
I imagine the school could invite:
- Visiting authors
- Master teachers
- Freelance writers
- Poets
- Journalists
Workshops and events could include:
- Craft workshops
- Journaling &/or art journaling
- Workshoping sessions
- Readings
- Bookfair
What do you think? Wouldn’t this be amazing?

Yes! I love this idea! I think schools should do it monthly!
During the school day is obviously best, but incorporating it into PTSA sponsored family literacy nights is also an option.
The teenagers in Humboldt County have a Writers Conference where they go to hear speakers on writing, and then have writing exercises. I would love to be part of something like that here as an author, or to lead a workshop for the kids interested in writing.
It’s a wonderful idea! I would love to think that there would be enough interested young writers to interest the whole school, but if not, maybe there could be a creativity conference, with a range of different creative pursuits/skills?
Love the idea, especially if it had a different twist on it compared to what they do in school. That could mean workshops on writing humor, or what to do if you don’t enjoy writing, etc…
When I was in 5th grade I went to a young writers workshop. It was an application or selection deal, so only kids who wanted to be there were. It was a week long deal and I had a great time.

Our school launched a bi-annual book fair. This would be a perfect time to add a Writers Conference in. Good suggestion.

I would love to do this, but I think my fourth graders would be a little overwhelmed by multiple presenters on the same day. I plan visiting author days for my students that correspond to what we’re currently working on. Good sources: local newspaper, local community college, talk with guest presenters at your local Barnes and Noble, local writers, and teachers who have been published. It’s a great opportunity for kids to see that real people write.
