Didn’t you just love Geoffrey Hayes’ post “Building Reading Skills Through Comic Books”?

My daughter is recently obsessively reading all the Archie comics from the library and it reminded me that I also loved Archie, Tintin and the Illustrated Classics that my school teacher mom had in her classroom.  Now, it’s time for a new generation of comic books and I’ve found Toon Books to be a cut above the rest!  These books amaze me with quality plotting, beautiful art and accessibility for younger readers.  I hope you’ll all check out the links below and enter to win a copy of Geoffrey’s book.

I enjoyed Archie as a child and as an adult probably Calvin and Hobbs. These Toon books look great. What a fun way to encourage reading. I checked out the website and would love to win The Big No No.

As a 2nd grade teacher with many reluctant readers, I have introduced many a comic book to students. Graphic novels have become very popular in my classroom. Frankie Pickle is our latest conquest during summer school. My family, ranging from ages 17 to 66, are huge Calvin and Hobbs fans. We have many “coffee table” comic books. They are great conversation pieces.

My kids love Calvin and Hobbes. We checked out some Toon Books from the library and visited the site. We think they are great! All my kids read a book called Amulet and watched a book trailer of it on a Scholastic Site. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdBM3TgSJ3o
I recently made a post on my blog about graphic novels. http://beginningreadinghelp.blogspot.com/2010/06/free-graphic-stories-and-comics-online.html

These are new for me but the notion of honoring kids with stories that make sense certainly intrigues me. I’m looking forward to discovering a new graphic adventure.
