My librarian recently told me that reading books to handle difficult situations is called bibliotherapy. So here are some bibliotherapy suggestions for back to school. Also, see Bookmarkable for a different round-up of Back-to-School books for kids.
On reading: Hooray for Reading Day by Margery Cuyler
Jessica, a first grader, worries about reading out loud in class. What’s worse, she has to read in front of the parents on Readers’ Theater Day. This is a wonderful story about not giving up, and perseverance.
On teasing: Simon’s Hook; A Story About Teases and Put-Downs by Karen Gedig Burnett
This book gives children specific strategies when dealing with unkindness. Simon’s grandma uses the analogy of a fish not biting a hook. The strategies for “not biting” include making a joke about it, agreeing with them, ignoring, and more. Simon learns the strategies and goes back to school with success.
On fitting in and self-esteem: Stephanie’s Ponytail by Robert Munsch
Stephanie has particularly interesting ponytail styles every day. When she goes to school, at first, the other children make fun of her. Then, they copy her. This book is a hilarious story about doing your own thing and not following the group.
On separation anxiety: The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn
I love this book! It’s a sweet story about a child’s first school experience. His mother reassures him that even though she’s not with him, he has her kiss in his hand whenever he needs it.
For writers: A Thesaurus
This is the BEST for writers. Teachers emphasize that good writers choose wonderful words. Even the best writers use a thesaurus to help find fabulous words that fit just right in their sentences.
